Chicago's bed bug problem is not a rumor

Chicago ranked third in the nation for bed bug infestations in a study released by Orkin. A resistant strain of bed bug emerged in 2000, and infestations have risen sharply since, with some statistics showing an increase of over 4,500% since the early 2000s. This is not just a residential problem. It shows up in office buildings, and it does it often enough that the Chicago City Council passed an ordinance specifically about it, treating a bed bug infestation in a commercial building as a compliance matter and not just a nuisance to be managed quietly.

That ordinance requires building managers and landlords to hire licensed professionals to terminate any bed bug infestation. Non-compliance carries real financial risk, fines of up to $1,000 a day. Professionals reported service calls to nursing homes 59% of the time, office buildings 46% of the time, schools and day care centers 47% of the time, and hospitals 36% of the time. Studies cited by USA Today put the number at nearly 1 in 5 office buildings nationwide, which makes this a mainstream commercial building problem rather than a rare or unusual one.

How bed bugs get into an office in the first place

Bed bugs do not start in an office building. They arrive in it, usually carried in on a suitcase or briefcase from a frequent traveler, or in an employee's gym bag from home. Once inside, they spread out through the building in search of food, and by the time anyone notices them, they have often already moved well beyond the spot where they first arrived, making the source of the infestation much harder to pin down after the fact.

They settle into places a normal cleaning pass would not reach: chair cushions, sofas, behind electrical outlets, in cracks and crevices around baseboards, even behind picture frames. If someone catches the signs early, an infestation can usually be contained to a few cubicles.
