Butterfield Road lobbies collect winter salt

The north end of Downers Grove, along Butterfield Road and the East-West Tollway, is lined with glass office buildings and corporate campuses. Most of them hold several tenants who share one lobby and the restrooms on each floor. A steady stream of people comes through the front doors on a weekday. Nearly all of them walk in from a parking lot or a garage. That lobby is the first thing a tenant's clients see.

From the first snow until spring, those lots and walks get salted, and the salt comes in on everyone's shoes. On stone and terrazzo it dries into a white film that dulls the finish, and the grit scratches the floor with every step. In carpet, salt pulls in moisture and sits down in the fibers where a vacuum does not reach. Leave it for a whole winter and the entrance looks worn out by April.

We machine scrub hard floors through the season and restore stone and terrazzo that salt has dulled. Then the floor gets a protective coating or sealer so the next winter does less harm. Carpet gets restorative extraction from IICRC certified technicians, and that is part of our standard contract instead of an extra charge. We follow the carpet maker's recommendations so the warranty stays valid, and carpets on our program have lasted more than twenty years.

Older downtown buildings have floors worth saving

Downtown Downers Grove grew up around the train station on Main Street, and much of its office space sits in older brick buildings. Some of it is a bank branch at street level. A lot of it is a single office suite above a shop or a restaurant. The floors in these buildings have usually been waxed over and over for decades, and many have been patched along the way.

Old wax is the usual problem. Each coat traps a little dirt under the next, and over the years the floor turns yellow or gray. Mopping does not fix it, and another coat on top only seals that dirt in. Underneath there is often terrazzo or vinyl tile in better shape than it looks. Stripping the old wax and restoring that floor is a much smaller job than tearing it out.

We clean single office suites as well as whole buildings. A second-floor suite on Main Street is held to the same Everyday Cleaner Standard as a large headquarters. Good Samaritan Hospital is on Highland Avenue, and medical and dental offices are spread across the rest of Downers Grove. These spaces are cleaned differently from a general office. Patients sit in the same waiting room chairs and touch the same door handles and check-in counter all day.
